Turquoise Bedside Table

May 1, 2013 by Patti 51 Comments

My hubby, Mr. OTN, is a voracious reader. I love to read as well but usually only one or two books at a time.  He has several going at once and they’re generally stacked on the floor next to his side of the bed, or unstacked and cascading across the bedroom floor! Buying him a Kindle has helped a bit but there are still the magazines, journals and such that come in the mail and find their way into that ever morphing pile. I used to move it all each week to vacuum, then carefully re-stack everything neatly in place but alas, I’ve given up that bit of folly. Now I just leave it alone until the dust bunnies begin to make their way over into my space!

So, a couple of months back, Mr. OTN put in a request  for a larger bedside table.  One that has a place to store books, a place to set a drink, and somewhere for his iPad, clock, chargers, etc.

“Do you think if we found something you’d paint it for me?”, he asked sweetly one day.

What? Of course! It would be the answer to both our prayers!!!

So we set off on a junk shopping trip and this is what we came up with:
It is actually a television stand, which makes it is a little taller than most bedside tables, but perfect for us because we have a high bed. The top swivels, making it nice for his iPad, the shelf pulls out for him to set his drink on and the inside of the cabinet is perfect for hiding messes.
Hubby didn’t tell me what color he wanted it so one night while he was meeting with a group of guys in our living room I went up to the master bath and began painting away.  This is the color I chose:
Pretty, yes? The color was a surprise for Mr. OTN, but he loved it!
I made it by mixing up some homemade chalk paint for the body (recipe HERE) using Valspar’s Lyndhurst Duchess Blue.  I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint (ASCP) in Graphite for the top and the shelves.
As you may have noticed in the “before” picture the piece was see-through. I added a leftover piece of bead board to the back, painted with ASCP Old White.
Observe the neatness of the books inside
(I’m going to keep that peaceful picture in my head).
The pull out shelf is a really nice feature for a bedside table.
Mr. OTN loves watching birds so I added a little bird and some branches to the top.  He wasn’t really in love with this addition because he‘s kinda’ rough on furniture and was worried about ruining it.  I sealed it with so many coats of Min Wax Polycrylic that I think it‘s pretty much hubby-proof!
I temporarily moved my Springtime cloche upstairs for staging purposes (no worries honey, this won’t fight for iPad space).
The glass knobs are new, purchased from a local antique store, and have a great iridescence to them.
Too girly for a guy‘s table?  I don’t think so. Once “staged” with hubby’s own possessions (which pretty much cover up the decorative accents) it‘s just perfect for his needs.

I have a grateful husband and my floor will once again be clean!
This is a very happy situation 🙂

“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you,
live at peace with everyone.” Romans 12:18

Step one in bedroom changes complete. Watch for more to come!

Patti, it is just beautiful! I love love the colors. I think it is plenty manly. Husbands have a way of making even the most feminine stuff manly when they leave all their stuff on it. 😉 I love that you used a TV stand. This is an awesome idea with the swivel feature. Enjoy your gorgeous stand. Blessings~ Wanda

A great addition to the bedroom and a great place for your husband to store his books. However, I must warn you. I am the multi-tasking reader in our house, and I have managed to gradually overload every choice of bedside table. I hope your cabinet will be the answer to your problem. Of course, it is so beautiful you could use anywhere.

Can you tell me if this was an all-wood stand or was some of it a laminated particle board? If it was a laminate, did you have to prime it with any particular product?

“In 1965, Charles Schulz, a devout Christian and “In 1965, Charles Schulz, a devout Christian and creator of the Peanuts comic strip, was asked to create a Christmas special for CBS featuring the Peanuts Characters. He agreed with one requirement, that they allow him to include the story of the birth of Jesus. Although the stations executives were hesitant and tried to convince him otherwise, Schulz was insistent. As a result, for the past 50 plus years, millions of people have watched “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and heard the story of Jesus and “what Christmas is all about.”

It wasn’t until a few years back that I realized a “hidden message” in the film. Linus, a child who seems to have some insecurities as he carries a security blanket with him at all times. In fact, Linus NEVER drops his blanket, except once....

While sharing the message of “what Christmas is all about,” Linus drops his blanket at the exact moment he says the words, “fear not!”

In this seemingly innocent moment, Linus delivers a powerful reminder of the true meaning of Christmas. We are to “fear not”, for Jesus is born. We needn’t rely on material things for security, we have God with us, “Immanuel”, (Matthew 1:23) Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior - the true meaning of Christmas.

Awhile back, someone informed me, indignantly so, that Linus picks up his blanket at the end of the speech so my interpretation must be wrong. Well, he was right, Linus does pick up his blanket at the end of his speech. However, he “drops” it again later...

Amid big, bright, colorful, shiny artificial trees, Charlie Brown chose the least of these, a little, wooden tree with just a few branches. Shortly thereafter, Linus uses his blanket to wrap about the base of the tree and says, “Maybe it just needs a little love”. In that moment, the tree “awakens”, stands tall and firm. A reminder that no matter who we are, how many mistakes we’ve made, a “little love” can make all the difference.

Let’s strive to “fear not” (Luke 2:10) and “love one another” (John 13:34), not just at Christmastime, but the whole year through.”
