WP Transfer Complete & an Old World Paint Technique Tutorial

August 20, 2013 by Patti 7 Comments

Whew! The Blogger to WordPress transfer is complete and I’m attempting my very first post on WordPress.  There is a story behind why I decided to switch to a self-hosted WP site.  The short version being that I woke up one day, logged on to my computer and when I tried to access my blog all I saw was a message shouting at me, “This content has been removed”!  There was a moment of heart dropping terror, followed by a frantic Internet search for answers, followed by a resigned, “Oh well, I’ve only lost over a years worth of hard work . . . !  For some unknown reason, my blog came back after a few hours and I decided that the WP transfer I’d been talking about needed to happen sooner rather than later.  Now, I don’t want to badmouth Blogger. I love Google and I use it every day.  Let’s just suffice to say that with a self-hosted site no one can shut me down.  What do you think Mr. OTN, is that a good thing or a bad thing?

So let’s get started with my first post.  I’ll begin by adding a picture right here:

1-1-Gesso Piece 001-001Hey! It came up! I must admit that figuring out how to size this picture took a bit of time but once I got the settings plugged in all of the other pics came up just the size I wanted them.  So, what do you think of  this “plasterish” piece of wall art I found at Goodwill?  The original $49.99 price tag was still on it but I only paid $6.99.  The color was a little dirty looking so I thought it might be fun to try using Gesso to create the Old World Finish that the amazing Rosemary at Villa Barnes is so adept at.  I followed her step-by-step instructions.

1-Gesso Piece 002I began by painting over the grime with Home Made Chalk Paint Recipe #3 in the color Myth by Behr Paints . You can find that recipe HERE.

01-Gesso Architectural Piece 001Then I slathered on the Gesso (this product is used to prepare canvas and other surfaces to receive paint and can be found at any craft supply store).

04-Gesso Architectural Piece 004I wiped it off before it could dry with an old t-shirt, leaving behind the Gesso that had settled into the crevices.

07-Gesso Architectural Piece 008So simple and the look is totally different, don’t you think?

09-Gesso Architectural Piece 010

10-Gesso Architectural Piece 011I think it now looks more like a piece of carved stone than plaster.

02-Gesso Architectural Piece 002She looks so pretty behind my kitchen stove but alas, she cannot stay.  This is just one more thing that will go along with me to the French Flea.

06-Gesso Architectural Piece 007The contents of my booth are growing one item at a time.

Okay, well my first post in WP was a little time consuming but not too bad, especially since it was just little ol’ me trying to figure things out all by myself!  There are still a few bugs to work out and there will definitely be a lot of new things to learn, just like there was with Blogger.  I’m still trying to get used to my new look but that is something I can easily play around with (believe me, I’ve changed the background and script color dozens of times already).  One feature I LOVE is that all my posts are truncated on the Home Page so that you can scroll down and see snippets of previous posts along with a thumbnail pic, and a button to “read more”.

All the credit for the Blogger to WP transfer goes to Kristi Linauer of Addicted2Decorating (Yay Kristi!). The whole process took her only one evening! The time that has elapsed since then has been me, wading through WP trying to figure things out.  I’ve actually been able to customize several things all by myself.  It’s funny . . .  I always tell people that I’m not computer savvy  because of my being of an older vintage . . .  but now . . .  what once seemed so foreign to me is really beginning to click.  When I talk to other people (even young people) about HTML, widgets, etc. they often give me a blank look.  I think I’m going to have to stop declaring myself a non-techy!  WP really isn’t harder, it is just different, and the options for customizing my blog are endless.  I’m sure I’ll be asking Kristi to fine tune a few things for me along the way but I’m feeling really good about becoming somewhat of a DIYer on the computer 🙂

      Blessings to you,

P.S. I’m still trying to figure out how to get comments to show up in my email so I can respond directly. Please be patient with me as I’m really not intentionally ignoring you!

I love the way the piece turned out, Patti! It does look like a very old carved stone.
It will be amazing in a vignette or wall decor.

Hi Patti, I just popped over from, er, I lost track of where I popped over from but I’m glad I found you anyway! LOL! Lovely blog indeed! Hmmm, so you made the move to WordPress… I hear you on the issues although I have managed to escape so far. Was it easy to move your blog over to WordPress and is it expensive? I do like a lot of features that I’ve seen on WordPress blogs but I was on WordPress once several years ago and I found it to be really confusing… do you have any issues with it being complicated?
I am now your newest follower and look forward to dropping by for visits often! 😀

Welcome! I am Perfectly Imperfect Patti and I’d like to invite you to come in and take a seat in this creative space of mine.

I love the process of hunting for orphaned and cast off furniture (particularly my Chosen Chairs) and then taking the time to transform each piece into something new and beautiful. This process allows me to reflect upon my own story of transformation and blesses me over and over with each piece I redesign.

For those wondering if this program really works, For those wondering if this program really works, I’m still going strong with @e2mfitness after four rounds, and now that they’ve released a new cookbook (available on Amazon) I am more excited than ever about my fitness journey. This is the first in a series of cookbooks, and this one features delicious beef and poultry recipes. It also includes dozens of recipes for dressings and spice blends to use in cooking, along with a weekly meal planner, water tracker, weekly exercise log, etc.
What is E2M? It is a virtual, eight week, rapid body transformation program for adults, which consists of workouts, meal, plans, cooking classes, mental fitness, and personal coaching. Workouts are designed for all fitness levels and can be done at home or in a gym. Our fit family is made up of people from across the world, from various backgrounds and ages, and we all have one common goal: to encourage each other to reach our personal best lifestyle fitness goals. After the first eight weeks, the program is available for free to maintain progress. This isn’t about getting skinny. It’s about building a healthier lifestyle, living longer, and getting the most out of the one body you’ve been blessed with. The next round opens on Thursday, and I truly hope you’ll check it out!

“In 1965, Charles Schulz, a devout Christian and “In 1965, Charles Schulz, a devout Christian and creator of the Peanuts comic strip, was asked to create a Christmas special for CBS featuring the Peanuts Characters. He agreed with one requirement, that they allow him to include the story of the birth of Jesus. Although the stations executives were hesitant and tried to convince him otherwise, Schulz was insistent. As a result, for the past 50 plus years, millions of people have watched “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and heard the story of Jesus and “what Christmas is all about.”

It wasn’t until a few years back that I realized a “hidden message” in the film. Linus, a child who seems to have some insecurities as he carries a security blanket with him at all times. In fact, Linus NEVER drops his blanket, except once....

While sharing the message of “what Christmas is all about,” Linus drops his blanket at the exact moment he says the words, “fear not!”

In this seemingly innocent moment, Linus delivers a powerful reminder of the true meaning of Christmas. We are to “fear not”, for Jesus is born. We needn’t rely on material things for security, we have God with us, “Immanuel”, (Matthew 1:23) Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior - the true meaning of Christmas.

Awhile back, someone informed me, indignantly so, that Linus picks up his blanket at the end of the speech so my interpretation must be wrong. Well, he was right, Linus does pick up his blanket at the end of his speech. However, he “drops” it again later...

Amid big, bright, colorful, shiny artificial trees, Charlie Brown chose the least of these, a little, wooden tree with just a few branches. Shortly thereafter, Linus uses his blanket to wrap about the base of the tree and says, “Maybe it just needs a little love”. In that moment, the tree “awakens”, stands tall and firm. A reminder that no matter who we are, how many mistakes we’ve made, a “little love” can make all the difference.

Let’s strive to “fear not” (Luke 2:10) and “love one another” (John 13:34), not just at Christmastime, but the whole year through.”
