Welcome to Our Den!

November 20, 2014 by Patti 10 Comments

Den and Kitchen Pictures 044The real estate listing called it the “den”.  I’ve never had a house with a den before but I liked the sound of the word and the feelings it stirred up in in me.

The word den brings to mind a warm, cozy place to hang out in winter.  A place with a crackling fireplace, comfy seating, books to read, soft candlelight, and a cup of something hot to drink. As I pondered how to decorate the den I decided it should be a place filled with things both old and new, an eclectic mix of items collected over the years.  I expect that the den is the place the family will gather for Thanksgiving and Christmas to catch a snooze after the big meal or to watch our favorite Christmas movies.  I can’t begin to express how excited I am to share this new place with family and friends this holiday season!

What does the word “DEN” conjure up in your mind?

Den and Farragoz Clock Face 059Welcome to Our Den!  Please come inside on this chilly Fall day, kick off your shoes if you’d like, find a seat and make yourself at home while I tell you about our den, the first “real” indoor room I’ve shown you in our new home.

Den and Farragoz Clock Face 060First off, our den is backed by the screened porch which I shared with you HERE.  This makes the room a little darker than the other rooms in the house  . . . but that’s okay because it goes along with the enclosed feeling a den should have.  Just like the furniture on the screened porch we negotiated in the real estate contract to have this leather couch included.

Den and Kitchen Pictures 057This is the cushiest, coziest couch, and without all my pillows (my little obsession), it is wide enough to fit two for a nap. But no napping today!

Den and Farragoz Clock Face 042You may recognize my decoupaged door from one of my very early posts, the tutorial of which you can access HERE.  I’m thinking about how I might change it up a bit to fit the atmosphere of the den a little better.   The armoire was in our old master bedroom and was always a little large for that space but it fits perfectly in the den and keeps the TV hidden away.  Hooray for not having to hang the TV over the fireplace!

Antlers 004You may also remember these gold tipped antlers from my Golden Entry Hall post last Fall.   The antlers made the move with us and I’m glad they did because I believe that every den should have a great set of antlers! Mine are hung over the doorway leading from the Entry Hall into the den.

Bookshelves in Den 027I already mentioned that a den should have something to read . . . and bookcases to keep the reading materials in of course.

Den and Kitchen Pictures 002We have quite a collection of books, some of which I’ve displayed here in the den along with some of the other things we’ve collected along the way.

Den and Farragoz Clock Face 052For this room we purchased a new rug, the round table and the linen covered chair.  The table and chair were a complete impulse buy when we went to buy the rug.   Normally, I prefer to find used furniture and give it new life but this time I’m glad we succumbed to impulse because it gave us one completed room to enjoy right away.

Den and Kitchen Pictures 067I’ve had this little chair for quite awhile and originally purchased it at an antique store in Olympia.  I think I’d like to recover it with linen to match the other chair and possibly even give it a coat of paint.

Den and Kitchen Pictures 064This one is pretty even though she isn’t old, and she has become mine, almost all mine!

Den and Farragoz Clock Face 050I’m toying with doing something with the backs of the bookcases also. Wallpaper or paint?  What do you think?

Den and Farragoz Clock Face 045Finally, this is my fireplace with a REAL mantel . . .

Den 001. . . and a place for my mirror.  I can hardly wait to start decorating it for Christmas!!!

Den and Farragoz Clock Face 061As you can see I’ve added a lot of light colored pillows to the couch in an effort to brighten the room.  I love the caramel wall color . . . it adds to the warm and cozy feeling . . . but it also darkens the room.  I may try a color similar to the light background color in the rug.  I’ll leave it alone for now though as I have enough projects I’m working on for the other rooms in the house, and it really is nice to have a room that isn’t “in process”.

So there you have it, a quick overview of our den.  I didn’t really “zoom in” to show you some of the details that help create the “feeling”, but that’s for another post.  I’m glad you took the time to stop by today and I’m thankful for your comments and suggestions on my other posts.  Since my old friends are so far away and I haven’t met my new friends yet, I really do appreciate  your input.

I’ll be back tonight with the “big reveal” of something I’ve been working on for my dining room.

Buffet Before 002Sneak peek!

Blessings,

What a great looking room, Patti! Love the fireplace and those built-ins are wonderful. The couch definitely looks very comfy. I could see myself there with a nice warm throw watching some holiday movies. : ) It looks like a room you will be spending a lot of enjoyable time in.

Patti, you described what I think of when I hear the word, den to a tee! You have done an awesome job in this space! Love the weathered trunk and the built ins. I’m sure a pop of color would be lovely, but I am kind of loving the clean look of the all white. The new linen chair is beautiful and the table is the perfect accent piece. I don’t think I would cover the other chair in linen to match. I like a more random look than all matchy. But then again, it’s your home. lol! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
    Jann

OldThingsNew

Welcome! I am Perfectly Imperfect Patti and I’d like to invite you to come in and take a seat in this creative space of mine.

I love the process of hunting for orphaned and cast off furniture (particularly my Chosen Chairs) and then taking the time to transform each piece into something new and beautiful. This process allows me to reflect upon my own story of transformation and blesses me over and over with each piece I redesign.

This is the first in a series of cookbooks, and this one features delicious beef and poultry recipes. It also includes dozens of recipes for dressings and spice blends to use in cooking, along with a weekly meal planner, water tracker, weekly exercise log, etc.
What is E2M? It is a virtual, eight week, rapid body transformation program for adults, which consists of workouts, meal, plans, cooking classes, mental fitness, and personal coaching. Workouts are designed for all fitness levels and can be done at home or in a gym. Our fit family is made up of people from across the world, from various backgrounds and ages, and we all have one common goal: to encourage each other to reach our personal best lifestyle fitness goals. After the first eight weeks, the program is available for free to maintain progress. This isn’t about getting skinny. It’s about building a healthier lifestyle, living longer, and getting the most out of the one body you’ve been blessed with. The next round opens on Thursday, and I truly hope you’ll check it out!

“In 1965, Charles Schulz, a devout Christian and “In 1965, Charles Schulz, a devout Christian and creator of the Peanuts comic strip, was asked to create a Christmas special for CBS featuring the Peanuts Characters. He agreed with one requirement, that they allow him to include the story of the birth of Jesus. Although the stations executives were hesitant and tried to convince him otherwise, Schulz was insistent. As a result, for the past 50 plus years, millions of people have watched “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and heard the story of Jesus and “what Christmas is all about.”

It wasn’t until a few years back that I realized a “hidden message” in the film. Linus, a child who seems to have some insecurities as he carries a security blanket with him at all times. In fact, Linus NEVER drops his blanket, except once....

While sharing the message of “what Christmas is all about,” Linus drops his blanket at the exact moment he says the words, “fear not!”

In this seemingly innocent moment, Linus delivers a powerful reminder of the true meaning of Christmas. We are to “fear not”, for Jesus is born. We needn’t rely on material things for security, we have God with us, “Immanuel”, (Matthew 1:23) Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior - the true meaning of Christmas.

Awhile back, someone informed me, indignantly so, that Linus picks up his blanket at the end of the speech so my interpretation must be wrong. Well, he was right, Linus does pick up his blanket at the end of his speech. However, he “drops” it again later...

Amid big, bright, colorful, shiny artificial trees, Charlie Brown chose the least of these, a little, wooden tree with just a few branches. Shortly thereafter, Linus uses his blanket to wrap about the base of the tree and says, “Maybe it just needs a little love”. In that moment, the tree “awakens”, stands tall and firm. A reminder that no matter who we are, how many mistakes we’ve made, a “little love” can make all the difference.

Let’s strive to “fear not” (Luke 2:10) and “love one another” (John 13:34), not just at Christmastime, but the whole year through.”
