Preparing the Guest Room – A Complete Checklist

December 10, 2015 by Patti 13 Comments

So the other night we were sitting in a cozy little restaurant in Brevard, SC after watching the Christmas parade and strolling through the cute shops in this darling mountain town.  As we ate our meal we had a delightful conversation with the couple sitting next to us and by the time the meal was over we were exchanging information and had invited them to come stay at our home the next time they come to the “big city”.

Do you like to entertain out-of-town guests?  Do you have a place for them to stay?  The home we live in now is the first home where we have two guest rooms and neither one is in a basement, or in one of the kid’s rooms, or on a sleeper sofa, or even a on blow up bed in the office.  Now I believe in being hospitable no matter what type of space you have for guests but it’s nice, at this stage in life, to have two bedrooms set aside exclusively for guests.

Note:  This post contains some affiliate links to things that I personally use and love.  I earn a small percentage from any purchases made through these links but it does not increase your cost for the products.

The Gold Room

When we were buying this house there were people who asked us what in the world the two of us would do with such a HUGE house.  First of all, it isn’t “huge” by Southern standards, and secondly, we chose a larger house for the sole purpose of having space to entertain.  I am so glad we did too because we have had a LOT of out of town guests since we moved here and hope that friends and family will find it so comfy that they’ll keep coming back!

Guest Bedrooms 018

What makes you feel comfortable when you’re away from home?

Guest Bedrooms 035

When I think about nice hotels I’ve stayed in the most important thing to me is the bed.  A comfortable mattress, soft sheets and extra pillows.

Guest Bedrooms 029

When people come to stay in my home I like them to have a bit of that Hotel experience.  I take care to clean the rooms right before they come so that everything is still fresh.

Guest Bedrooms 020

I like to put reading material out that would be of interest to the person or persons we are entertaining.

Guest Bedrooms 023

I want the room to feel cozy and nicely decorated but not cluttered.

Guest Bedrooms 030

I want the room to speak a great big welcome to my guests.

Guest Bedroom 025

The Blue Room

Besides feeling welcome I want my guests to feel celebrated and to know that we are happy to have them here.

Guest Bedroom 026

When I’m pulling my guest rooms together for company I feel great joy as I anticipate spending time with friends, old and new.

Guest Bedroom 028

Before my guests arrive I like to say a blessing over each room, that my guests will find their stay to be a time of refreshing,

Guest Bedroom 031

and that they will feel God’s love here in our home.

Guest Bedroom 027

Like I said, we’ve had a lot of company in the year that we’ve lived here in South Carolina.  We’ve had family members (my heart), guests who have been our friends for a long time, and some guests who we never even met before they came to stay (friends of friends).  It didn’t take long for them to become our friends though and we look forward to future visits together.

 Guest Bedrooms 003

We are blessed to be in a stage of life where it’s easy for us to entertain.  I know that you may not have two guest rooms in your home but however you entertain overnight guests I’d encourage you to think about what makes you comfortable when you are away from home and prepare for your guests with that in mind.

Guest Bedroom 032

The following is a comprehensive list of items you might consider having for your guest room.

 Guest Room Prep List:

  • A comfortable mattress (I use foam mattress toppers on ALL of our beds)
  • Extra pillows and blankets
  • Bedside table and lamp
  • Wifi password
  • Reading material, i.e. magazines, short stories, books that give a little history about your city
  • Alarm Clock
  • A small fan for white noise
  • A space for clothes, either in a dresser or closet space
  • Extra hangers
  • A hanging bag for shoes
  • Extra bathrobes and slipper socks
  • Lint roller
  • Bottled Water
  • A basket of snacks such as packaged crackers and cheese, nuts, chocolate, or trail mix.
  • A television or radio/CD player (we are still working at getting the TV hung in one of our guest bedrooms)
  • A coffee maker and supplies (if space allows – We put the coffee maker in the bonus room across the hall from the guest rooms)
  • Trash basket
  • An extra house key in case your guests are venturing out on their own

Bathroom Prep List:

  • Water glasses
  • New toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss
  • Packets of Advil and Tylenol
  • Liquid hand soap
  • Body Soap
  • Hand and body cream
  • Facial cloths for removing makeup (I like Burt’s Bees for sensitive skin)
  • Disposable razors
  • Shampoo & conditioner (my guests have commented on how much they’ve enjoyed my OGX Coconut Milk Shampoo & Conditioner)
  • Deodorant
  • Hair Dryer
  • Hair Spray (I use Tresemme Extra Firm Control for the humidity in the south)
  • Curling Iron
  • Magnified and lighted makeup mirror
  • Good quality towels and washcloths
  • Extra Toilet Paper
  • Facial tissue
  • Q-tips and cotton balls
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Trash Basket
  • A basket under the sink with bathroom cleaning supplies (I don’t expect my guests to clean up after themselves but sometimes they want to so I keep the supplies handy)
  • Plunger

That is one LONG list isn’t it?  What do you like to find in a guest room when you are the visitor?  Are there things you would add to my list?  I’d love to hear.

“Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it!” (Hebrews 13:2 NLT)
Hmmm . . . about that couple from Brevard . . . 😉

Blessings,

What an amazing couple you two are…..I bet when we get to Heaven we’re in different “suites”….yours will most likely be quite opulent, compared to mine….sigh…. 😉
I am blessed to call you my friend, even though we have yet to have our first face to face! Someday we will.

Being ready for welcoming guests can be tough for many. Seems like you and your husband have the gift of hospitality. We love to have family and friends for overnight or longer visits. We on;t have extra rooms but we do have willing kids who readily will displace themselves at a moment’s notice if needed. Your lists is so complete adn must make guests feel very welcome. Merry Christmas, Linda visiting from Rooted in Thyme link party today.

Something I always need when staying with friends … is the info to log into the internet. Just one other thing is a copy of the key in case your guests go out for dinner, or to a show & you’ll be passing ships in the night/morning … 🙂 Other than those couple of little things, these are excellent lists. 🙂

Welcome! I am Perfectly Imperfect Patti and I’d like to invite you to come in and take a seat in this creative space of mine.

I love the process of hunting for orphaned and cast off furniture (particularly my Chosen Chairs) and then taking the time to transform each piece into something new and beautiful. This process allows me to reflect upon my own story of transformation and blesses me over and over with each piece I redesign.

For those wondering if this program really works, For those wondering if this program really works, I’m still going strong with @e2mfitness after four rounds, and now that they’ve released a new cookbook (available on Amazon) I am more excited than ever about my fitness journey. This is the first in a series of cookbooks, and this one features delicious beef and poultry recipes. It also includes dozens of recipes for dressings and spice blends to use in cooking, along with a weekly meal planner, water tracker, weekly exercise log, etc.
What is E2M? It is a virtual, eight week, rapid body transformation program for adults, which consists of workouts, meal, plans, cooking classes, mental fitness, and personal coaching. Workouts are designed for all fitness levels and can be done at home or in a gym. Our fit family is made up of people from across the world, from various backgrounds and ages, and we all have one common goal: to encourage each other to reach our personal best lifestyle fitness goals. After the first eight weeks, the program is available for free to maintain progress. This isn’t about getting skinny. It’s about building a healthier lifestyle, living longer, and getting the most out of the one body you’ve been blessed with. The next round opens on Thursday, and I truly hope you’ll check it out!

“In 1965, Charles Schulz, a devout Christian and “In 1965, Charles Schulz, a devout Christian and creator of the Peanuts comic strip, was asked to create a Christmas special for CBS featuring the Peanuts Characters. He agreed with one requirement, that they allow him to include the story of the birth of Jesus. Although the stations executives were hesitant and tried to convince him otherwise, Schulz was insistent. As a result, for the past 50 plus years, millions of people have watched “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and heard the story of Jesus and “what Christmas is all about.”

It wasn’t until a few years back that I realized a “hidden message” in the film. Linus, a child who seems to have some insecurities as he carries a security blanket with him at all times. In fact, Linus NEVER drops his blanket, except once....

While sharing the message of “what Christmas is all about,” Linus drops his blanket at the exact moment he says the words, “fear not!”

In this seemingly innocent moment, Linus delivers a powerful reminder of the true meaning of Christmas. We are to “fear not”, for Jesus is born. We needn’t rely on material things for security, we have God with us, “Immanuel”, (Matthew 1:23) Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior - the true meaning of Christmas.

Awhile back, someone informed me, indignantly so, that Linus picks up his blanket at the end of the speech so my interpretation must be wrong. Well, he was right, Linus does pick up his blanket at the end of his speech. However, he “drops” it again later...

Amid big, bright, colorful, shiny artificial trees, Charlie Brown chose the least of these, a little, wooden tree with just a few branches. Shortly thereafter, Linus uses his blanket to wrap about the base of the tree and says, “Maybe it just needs a little love”. In that moment, the tree “awakens”, stands tall and firm. A reminder that no matter who we are, how many mistakes we’ve made, a “little love” can make all the difference.

Let’s strive to “fear not” (Luke 2:10) and “love one another” (John 13:34), not just at Christmastime, but the whole year through.”
