Happily Going Grey

August 15, 2017 by Patti 45 Comments

I have this friend.  She has an opinion about what I “should” do in nearly every area of my life.  The only areas where she doesn’t weigh in are in more private matters, but that’s only because I keep them private.  Do you have anyone in your life like this friend of mine?

Not too long ago she asked me what I thought about letting my hair go grey.  When I gave her my reasons for coloring it – I like my hair the color it is, it has more body and looks thicker when I color it, my husband likes it and doesn’t care about the money I’m wasting :), I feel younger without the grey – it was as though I hit a nerve as she began giving me a long list of reasons why I SHOULD go grey, topping the list off by telling me I can’t really like the person God created me to be if I can’t accept the way He created me.

Wowsers!

Let me assure you that I love grey hair.  I think grey hair is beautiful.  My older sister allowed her hair to go grey recently and it is a halo of white (I can only hope that mine will look like hers someday).  So maybe I’m stubborn (oh you know that I am) but I’m just not ready to embrace the grey just because someone tells me I should.

Today I want to tell you where I am happy to go grey though and that’s my interior doors and windows.  I’m behind, as usual, with this trend of dark grey or black interior doors but the color is classic and I think the trend is going to be around for a long time.

Now I know it isn’t necessary to apologize for what I’m going to show you but I really want you to see beyond the big glaring distractions that pull you out of the moment and keep you from fully enjoying my doors.

  1. The chip-up bar across my laundry room door.

2.  The gold knobs that I haven’t gotten around to spray painting yet.

Good, now we can move forward.

These were all my kitchen doors and windows.  This window is my favorite.

This is the powder room door.

The spray paint really does look good and was easy to do.

The coat closet.  I did not paint the inside of the front door because I love it just the color it is.

My dining room, looking back into the kitchen.  This is all I’ve finished so far but I think I should take the paint upstairs and do the whole house?  What do you think?

While I’m at it, let me show you how I painted my dining room ceiling grey too.  It is a little lighter color than the doors but I think it contrasts well with the trim.

Ahhh, going grey has made me so very happy. 🙂

By the way, that friend I told you about?  I’m not offended by what she said to me.  She is who she is and she is still my friend.  I’ve found that my friends are a great big mix of personalities and none of them are quite the same as me (good thing).  We accept and love one another in spite of our differences and learn and grow in the process.

Thanks for stopping by today.  Have a beautiful week my friends.

P.S. The colors I used were:  Doors – Benjamin Moore Kendall Charcoal;  Ceiling – Sherwin Williams Fawn Brindle;  Lower Dining room wall – Sherwin Williams Grecian Ivory (I love the grey undertones in this color and you can see that it provides quite a contrast to the trim); Trim – Sherwin Williams Creamy; Kitchen walls – Benjamin Moore Beach Glass.

P.S.S.  In answer to a question from one of you: I painted the doors while they were hanging, and used the painting method I share on my sidebar (Ten Steps to a Perfectly painted Door).  For these interior doors I used a 1″ brush in the indentations and a small sponge roller for the flat areas.  It was amazing and oh, so quick!  As for the hardware, I used a very small brush and carefully painted around it (I do have a steady hand), but for future doors I will take the doorknobs off and spray paint them while the doors are being painted. You could tape around them too.

P.S.S.S. If you liked this post I would love for you to share it or Pin it!

Oh my, I absolutely love the grey in your home! I have been contemplating applying more grey to my own home and now I’m ready to move forward. I will be preparing a plan for my fall/winter project. As for your hair color, it’s beautiful. True beauty comes from within and it wouldn’t matter what color your hair was – your posts reflect who “you” are on the inside and the outside. I’ve had to look within my own self many times after reading some of your posts – thank you! God has truly blessed you… and us, your readers.

Haha! Not really Rosie. It amuses me more than it irks me, and what I’ve learned after years of trying to figure out female friendships is, we all are a little bit different and we all have our quirks, and I can let these things go when they come from people I genuinely enjoy spending time with. She does know my opinion on her suggestion though and she knows she won’t see this head going grey any time soon 🙂

Grey or gray? I’m really not too sure. I actually Googled both spellings and grey came up most often so I went with it. It could be a country of origin thing, like hair color or hair colour. Haha! As for painting your lower kitchen cabinets gray/grey, I love that look. I’ve seen it all over Pinterest and would do it in a heartbeat if you have a light, bright kitchen. My kitchen, though it looks light in pictures, is on the west side of the house and only gets sun in the morning, and the shutters make it dark as well. Let me know what you decide to do. Do you blog? I don’t see a website listed with your email. If you do, I’ll go over and follow you so I can see your house.

Love your hair & your doors, too. That doesn’t sound like a “friend”, that sounds as though she has personal issues, and only makes herself feel better by giving others unwanted “advice”. This would be fun: Before she gives her advice, tell her that for each bit of advice she gives you, that you will give her 2!!! Bet she can’t take that!! Or, you can ask her why she feels the “need” to advise you? Don’t let anyone push your buttons. Don’t even let them know where your buttons are. God loves you!! Bev. (Retired Counselor)

Well Patti, I’m with you, not going grey until I’m too old to put that color on my roots myself. lol! Love the grey on your doors! I would love to go grey here, but our entire home has tan blinds. The baseboards and doors are tan as well. We are gradually changing that. We are adding wood flooring to our family room and bedroom. We’ve already painted the woodwork white in the bedroom, but will do the family room while being torn up. We’ve put it on hold until Oct. so that I can recover after my surgery. Thanks for sharing with SYC.

Thank you so much for the compliments Lisa. I certainly have a tendency to play it safe and painting my doors grey took a bit of bravery and then time with only one door painted, deciding if I liked the look. I’m so glad I went forward with the whole main floor. Upstairs next? Maybe.

He agreed with one requirement, that they allow him to include the story of the birth of Jesus. Although the stations executives were hesitant and tried to convince him otherwise, Schulz was insistent. As a result, for the past 50 plus years, millions of people have watched “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and heard the story of Jesus and “what Christmas is all about.”

It wasn’t until a few years back that I realized a “hidden message” in the film. Linus, a child who seems to have some insecurities as he carries a security blanket with him at all times. In fact, Linus NEVER drops his blanket, except once....

While sharing the message of “what Christmas is all about,” Linus drops his blanket at the exact moment he says the words, “fear not!”

In this seemingly innocent moment, Linus delivers a powerful reminder of the true meaning of Christmas. We are to “fear not”, for Jesus is born. We needn’t rely on material things for security, we have God with us, “Immanuel”, (Matthew 1:23) Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior - the true meaning of Christmas.

Awhile back, someone informed me, indignantly so, that Linus picks up his blanket at the end of the speech so my interpretation must be wrong. Well, he was right, Linus does pick up his blanket at the end of his speech. However, he “drops” it again later...

Amid big, bright, colorful, shiny artificial trees, Charlie Brown chose the least of these, a little, wooden tree with just a few branches. Shortly thereafter, Linus uses his blanket to wrap about the base of the tree and says, “Maybe it just needs a little love”. In that moment, the tree “awakens”, stands tall and firm. A reminder that no matter who we are, how many mistakes we’ve made, a “little love” can make all the difference.

Let’s strive to “fear not” (Luke 2:10) and “love one another” (John 13:34), not just at Christmastime, but the whole year through.”
