I have this friend. She has an opinion about what I “should” do in nearly every area of my life. The only areas where she doesn’t weigh in are in more private matters, but that’s only because I keep them private. Do you have anyone in your life like this friend of mine?
Not too long ago she asked me what I thought about letting my hair go grey. When I gave her my reasons for coloring it – I like my hair the color it is, it has more body and looks thicker when I color it, my husband likes it and doesn’t care about the money I’m wasting :), I feel younger without the grey – it was as though I hit a nerve as she began giving me a long list of reasons why I SHOULD go grey, topping the list off by telling me I can’t really like the person God created me to be if I can’t accept the way He created me.
Wowsers!
Let me assure you that I love grey hair. I think grey hair is beautiful. My older sister allowed her hair to go grey recently and it is a halo of white (I can only hope that mine will look like hers someday). So maybe I’m stubborn (oh you know that I am) but I’m just not ready to embrace the grey just because someone tells me I should.
Today I want to tell you where I am happy to go grey though and that’s my interior doors and windows. I’m behind, as usual, with this trend of dark grey or black interior doors but the color is classic and I think the trend is going to be around for a long time.
Now I know it isn’t necessary to apologize for what I’m going to show you but I really want you to see beyond the big glaring distractions that pull you out of the moment and keep you from fully enjoying my doors.
- The chip-up bar across my laundry room door.
2. The gold knobs that I haven’t gotten around to spray painting yet.
Good, now we can move forward.
These were all my kitchen doors and windows. This window is my favorite.
The spray paint really does look good and was easy to do.
The coat closet. I did not paint the inside of the front door because I love it just the color it is.
My dining room, looking back into the kitchen. This is all I’ve finished so far but I think I should take the paint upstairs and do the whole house? What do you think?
While I’m at it, let me show you how I painted my dining room ceiling grey too. It is a little lighter color than the doors but I think it contrasts well with the trim.
Ahhh, going grey has made me so very happy. 🙂
By the way, that friend I told you about? I’m not offended by what she said to me. She is who she is and she is still my friend. I’ve found that my friends are a great big mix of personalities and none of them are quite the same as me (good thing). We accept and love one another in spite of our differences and learn and grow in the process.
Thanks for stopping by today. Have a beautiful week my friends.
P.S. The colors I used were: Doors – Benjamin Moore Kendall Charcoal; Ceiling – Sherwin Williams Fawn Brindle; Lower Dining room wall – Sherwin Williams Grecian Ivory (I love the grey undertones in this color and you can see that it provides quite a contrast to the trim); Trim – Sherwin Williams Creamy; Kitchen walls – Benjamin Moore Beach Glass.
P.S.S. In answer to a question from one of you: I painted the doors while they were hanging, and used the painting method I share on my sidebar (Ten Steps to a Perfectly painted Door). For these interior doors I used a 1″ brush in the indentations and a small sponge roller for the flat areas. It was amazing and oh, so quick! As for the hardware, I used a very small brush and carefully painted around it (I do have a steady hand), but for future doors I will take the doorknobs off and spray paint them while the doors are being painted. You could tape around them too.
P.S.S.S. If you liked this post I would love for you to share it or Pin it!

Gosh I just love these pictures. And your house. And you.
And in our new-to-us Grey Cape Cod, I will be taking these door and window ideas!
Thank you for posting this just for me.
Patti says
Ahhh, thank you, and your welcome 🙂 I can hardly wait to see what you’re going to do with your Cape Cod because I know she will be stunning. Thank YOU for helping me make the color choice for my doors. You are da’ bestest! HUGS 🙂
Barbie says
Your home is so beautiful. I love the grey doors. And, I’m not comfortable going grey just yet. Perhaps in another 10 years!
Patti says
Thank you Barbie. It took a friend to come alongside and encourage me to take up my paintbrush and paint my doors but I’m glad I did. Ten years to grey hair? That sounds good to me too.
Kristi Knox says
Love your grey doors! Doing my china cabinet and table in grey. Keep you hair your color if you are happy! Love it. Xoxo
Patti says
Thank you Kristi. I think grey is a very elegant color and you are going to love what it does for your dining room. Yes to hair dye! XOXO
Everyday Living says
Patti, I can’t go gray, not yet! I love your doors…the color is stunning and looks beautiful in your home! Would you send me your address and I will get the book out to you on Thursday! Congrats, you will love it!
Patti says
Hooray for hair dye! One day we’ll be ready and we’ll rock it I’m sure. Thank you for the compliment on my doors. That too felt like a bit of a risk but I am so happy with the end result.
The cookbook. Can I tell you how excited I am about that? I know that I’ll love it. Thank you so much Pam and big hugs!
Jen says
The grey in your home is gorgeous! I’ve gone grey too! But only in my home. Hair colour is a beautiful thing. xoxo
Patti says
I’ve seen some of the grey you’ve used in your home and I love it Jen. And yes to beautiful hair colour/color! LOL 🙂
Tamra says
Oh my, I absolutely love the grey in your home! I have been contemplating applying more grey to my own home and now I’m ready to move forward. I will be preparing a plan for my fall/winter project. As for your hair color, it’s beautiful. True beauty comes from within and it wouldn’t matter what color your hair was – your posts reflect who “you” are on the inside and the outside. I’ve had to look within my own self many times after reading some of your posts – thank you! God has truly blessed you… and us, your readers.
Patti says
You can’t even know what a blessing your words are to me today Tamra. It is always good to hear that the words I write have touched someone in the deep places of the heart. I’m so thankful that you took the time to write to me today because now your words have touched me <3
As for the greys in the home – go for it! I think you’ll love it.

Your home is so beautiful!
Patti says
Thank you Gina. I appreciate the compliment. It is a compilation of years of gifts received and treasures collected. 😉
PJ says
Once again, it’s all beautiful. Did you paint the doors while hanging or take them off the hinges and any tips in doing them one way or the other? How did you prep. the hardware?
BTW….love the dog pictures on IG. They always make me smile. Bless you and your projects. : )
Patti says
Thank you PJ. I painted the doors while they werehanging, and used the painting method I share on my sidebar (10 steps to a perfectly painted door). You could tape around them too. I know, I probably should’ve included all this in the post. I always forget something! Heading over to rectify that now. Thank you!
Rosie Walsh says
Have you strongly considered telling this “friend” to mind her own business? I’m serious! Tell her it just irks the hell out of you. I would.
Off my high horse, off to make enchiladas. Your house is glorious, so much natural light.
Rosie
Patti says
Haha! Not really Rosie. It amuses me more than it irks me, and what I’ve learned after years of trying to figure out female friendships is, we all are a little bit different and we all have our quirks, and I can let these things go when they come from people I genuinely enjoy spending time with. She does know my opinion on her suggestion though and she knows she won’t see this head going grey any time soon 🙂
Jane says
Such a beautiful shade of gray and it is an awesome complementary neutral for your home. I love your doors!
The only gray items in my home is a set of Anthro summer print napkins and you would not believe how I have mixed them!
Your friend sounds like my mother. Your hair is very pretty as it is!
Patti says
Maybe my friend IS your mother! Haha! My mom was kind of like that too, and she really did obsess a bit over my hair. Funny 🙂 Anyway, I wish I could see how you’ve mixed your Antro napkins. I’m sure you’ve done something really special.
melinda says
I have went gray,or is it grey? Myl hair is to long for color,it would take a gallon of dye:*( lol ! I am contemplating painting my lower cabinets in the kitchen gray….and leaving the uppers white? any suggestions? on the cabinets, not my hair? LOL hahaha….
Patti says
Grey or gray? I’m really not too sure. I actually Googled both spellings and grey came up most often so I went with it. It could be a country of origin thing, like hair color or hair colour. Haha! As for painting your lower kitchen cabinets gray/grey, I love that look. I’ve seen it all over Pinterest and would do it in a heartbeat if you have a light, bright kitchen. My kitchen, though it looks light in pictures, is on the west side of the house and only gets sun in the morning, and the shutters make it dark as well. Let me know what you decide to do. Do you blog? I don’t see a website listed with your email. If you do, I’ll go over and follow you so I can see your house.
melinda says
No,I don’t blog I am not that talented:) I read several for inspiration…yours is one of them..I like your style. I believe we have the same love for Christ as well,so that is a bonus:)
Patti says
A REAL bonus Melinda 🙂
Marlene Stephenson says
I love your doors and ceilings, thanks for posting these pictures for i think i would like some gray in my house as well.
Patti says
Thanks for the compliment Marlene. I really am enjoying it. Would love to see what you do with your house when you get ‘er done. 🙂
Bev says
Love your hair & your doors, too. That doesn’t sound like a “friend”, that sounds as though she has personal issues, and only makes herself feel better by giving others unwanted “advice”. This would be fun: Before she gives her advice, tell her that for each bit of advice she gives you, that you will give her 2!!! Bet she can’t take that!! Or, you can ask her why she feels the “need” to advise you? Don’t let anyone push your buttons. Don’t even let them know where your buttons are. God loves you!! Bev. (Retired Counselor)
Patti says
Haha! Thanks Bev! Love that you are a retired counselor. As I answered Rosie below, I have voiced my opinion regarding her advice and she knows she won’t see my head gong grey any time soon. Buttons intact and I know He loves me MOST! Blessings to you <3
Gentle Joy Homemaker says
Beautiful home! I love the gray and white… so crisp and clean… and a beautiful backdrop.
Patti says
Thank you so much my friend. As a photographer, you do know beautiful backdrops and color! Blessings 🙂
Sandra @ Maison De Jardin says
Love the gray in your home – it is soft and lovely. About the color of your hair, well I agree with Bev. Your “friend” doesn’t sound like a friend.
Enjoy the pretty changes you have made to your home and these last days of summer. Have a great weekend!
Patti says
Thank you sweet friend. Summer is waning and I am enjoying it to the fullest!
Lisa notes... says
When I was in my 20s, I used to say I wouldn’t dye my hair when it turned gray. Until gray hairs started popping up. 🙂 One day I look forward to letting it naturally be all gray, but not yet. I’ll just keep the gray on my walls for now.
Patti says
I agree with you on this one Lisa. When my roots are showing I’ve tried pulling my hair back from my forehead to see where I stand, and I’m not nearly white enough to want to take the plunge yet. Vanity, vanity . . .
Nikki G says
Well I LOVE your gray. paint, that is. And as for hair coloring… long live Clairol (or whoever makes that stuff my hairstylist uses)!! Does this friend of yours wear makeup? Does she wear clothes? Does she wear jewelry? sigh…. LOL
Live and let live!
🙂 gwingal
Patti says
Haha! You make me smile. Amen to “Long live Clairol.”
Patti says
Haha! Long live Clairol indeed!
carlielake says
It was fun reading your post, Patti. You have a beautiful home, and I love your grey doors. Such a crisp, classy colour.
Patti says
Thank you Carlie. I appreciate the compliment 🙂
Jann Olson says
Well Patti, I’m with you, not going grey until I’m too old to put that color on my roots myself. lol! Love the grey on your doors! I would love to go grey here, but our entire home has tan blinds. The baseboards and doors are tan as well. We are gradually changing that. We are adding wood flooring to our family room and bedroom. We’ve already painted the woodwork white in the bedroom, but will do the family room while being torn up. We’ve put it on hold until Oct. so that I can recover after my surgery. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann
larr says
I love your gray doors–they really pop. I think we have a tendency to stick with white trim and doors because it is safe but adding more color add personality to a home. Your home looks lovely and so does your hair.
Patti says
Thank you so much for the compliments Lisa. I certainly have a tendency to play it safe and painting my doors grey took a bit of bravery and then time with only one door painted, deciding if I liked the look. I’m so glad I went forward with the whole main floor. Upstairs next? Maybe.
Jean | DelightfulRepast.com says
Patti, I’m with you – on the doors AND the hair! 😀 Beautiful job on those doorknobs too. I like the gold/brass stuff also, so when we redid our bedroom and changed out all the hardware to the bronze, I left some touches of brass with the lamps and wall décor.
