The Write 31 Days Challenge – 31 Days,Every Day,One Topic
Day 22
(day 1 starts here)
One of my favorite things to do at the beach is collect shells, and we recently found a beach that was covered in them! The hunt was on as I began searching for the most beautiful, most perfect, most amazing seashells I could find. If you are a shell gatherer you know that even on a beach littered with shells it can be hard to find unbroken specimens.
“Oh, that one’s kinda pretty, and this one is certainly unique.”
Cradling my stash of shells protectively in the palm of my hand my eye caught sight of the best one yet. Except for . . .
. . . upon picking it up, I found that the entire underside of the shell was missing.
“Oh darn, if it wasn’t broken it would be the best shell of them all.”
“Isn’t the fact that it’s broken perfectly in two what makes that shell unique? And just what shells DO you consider special? Look at that simple white clam shell. Isn’t it beautiful in it’s own right? And the colors in that crooked oyster shell, aren’t they amazing? Or that piece of sand dollar that’s broken and worn down until there’s nothing left but the shape of a small heart?”
“Okay Lord, I get it. It is a life lesson I still forget sometimes – to look for beauty in the ordinary, or the cracked, or the broken. Just like you do with us. Thank you.”
So I picked up that imperfect shell, along with several others, because there truly is something beautiful in every one of God’s creations.
That includes YOU!
Today, I want to share a simple way to corral a collection of anything you might like to gather. Stones, shells, shark’s teeth (that’s my hubby).
In the past I’ve had collections of seashells along window sills or scattered among books on the bookshelves, but since I’m living in a smaller house now I’m trying to minimalize – at least a little bit! My friend Leslie of Goodbye House, Hello Home, is the queen of minimalizing in her job as a home stager. When she was helping me with my guest bedroom she came up with the prettiest way to gather my favorite shells all in one place. In this simple cloche we found at Hobby Lobby 🙂
Don’t they look amazing???
Now I have to decide what to do with the rest of the shells I’ve picked up because I don’t need to be wasting time dusting them anymore. Hmmm, that’s hard. I think maybe my gardens will have to start growing some shells.
Tomorrow is Day 23 and we will be discussing Believing New Thoughts.
Until then, blessings friends,
