Napkin Decoupaged Eggs

March 12, 2013 by Patti 39 Comments

So here is another of the decorations seen in my post Spring Dreamin’, along with a step-by-step tutorial for making your own decoupaged Easter eggs (AND the secret for getting dozens of eggs done in record time)! There are so many terrific egg decorating ideas across the Internet. This one is fairly simple but so striking with all the colors to be found in paper napkins.

I started with a couple of different types of eggs, plastic eggs from The Dollar Store and some wooden eggs from Goodwill. The Goodwill eggs were already painted, someone else’s project passed along for my re-use! I prefer the wooden eggs, if you can find them, as they are flat on the bottom and will stand on end.
For my egg design I used these lovely Spring napkins from The Dollar Store and Marshall’s.
Begin by cutting out the shapes that you want to apply to your egg.
If your napkins are multi-layered you’ll want to separate them into a single sheet before gluing.
I used Mod Podge Gloss for the eggs shown here. Begin by applying the decoupage medium with a paintbrush, to the area you where you want to place your first shape (I laid down wax paper to prevent the eggs from sticking to my work surface).

Lay your pre-cut shape on top of the glue you’ve applied and begin patting it into place with your paintbrush. Don’t worry about a few wrinkles, they actually add to effect.
After your shape is patted down, apply a layer of glue over the top of the piece you’ve just applied. This will secure it and seal it. Don’t worry about visible glue as it will dry clear.
I recommend applying one shape at a time and allowing it to dry a bit before going on to the next section. Otherwise, your fingers will stick and pull the paper away from the egg.
You really can’t mess this up. If you finish your egg and don’t like the layout, simply add some more shapes until you’re satisfied with the result. This one was done all in script. Then I added a butterfly for a touch of color.
You can see the many layers on this egg. No perfection aimed for here, just keep going until you like the result.
Now, here is the secret to getting a nice big basket of decorated eggs for your Easter table. Invite about a dozen friends over for a luncheon and a little crafting time. Wander around giving them instructions for creating the most beautiful eggs ever. When they’ve used up most of the eggs you’ve supplied say, “Wow! The eggs you’ve created are so amazing. Thank you all for coming today and helping me complete my Easter decorations!”

You should’ve seen the look on my sweet friend Monica’s face when she heard those words coming out of my mouth. She was so proud of the eggs she’d created, and of the decoupaged vase she’d made from her Frappucino bottle, that she was stunned that she was going to have to give it all up!!!  Haha! Of course I didn’t mean it and I didn’t really take any one’s eggs away from them. It was a pretty funny moment though!  Okay, I’ll admit that I’m lucky my friends have good senses of humor.

Here are a few close-ups of my completed eggs. I think they are so colorful and fun.

In case you missed my Rosette Wreath Tutorial and are in the mood for making more you can link to that post here.

I’ll be back in a few days with one more Spring Dreamin’ tutorial. Until then, blessings to you,

Bunnies, Bunnies, Everywhere!

March 18, 2016 by Patti 11 Comments

To be sure, the bunnies  overrunning my house are more prolific than my writing has been of late!  We spent the first week of March in San Diego and since then I’ve spent much of my time fighting and then recuperating from an influenza virus.  UGH!

“No honey, I did NOT get my flu shot this year but I’m glad you did.”

So today, my words will be few and I’ll simply share a few Spring/Easter vignettes scattered around my house.Easter Decor 002This mama bunny cookie jar adorns my kitchen island, along with a pot of lavender and some gold leafed eggs.

Easter Decor 003Notice baby bunnies peeking out from beneath mama’s skirts.

Easter Decor 004

Easter Decor 043On my kitchen counter is a tray holding another porcelain bunny.

Easter Decor 005Easter Decor 006And one of many nests scattered throughout my house.

Easter Decor and Spring Arrangement 056The den has gone Green for Spring (more pics showing my bookcases HERE).

Easter Decor 017Thrifted and painted candlesticks and silver.

Easter Decor 016Dried hydrangeas from last year’s garden and a DIY moss covered cross.

Easter Decor 013I shared this photo on Instagram of a collection of vintage pocket watches and a tiny bird’s nest.

Easter Decor and Spring Arrangement 047Vintage books abound in my home decor.

Easter Decor 023I found this big bunny in a thrift store last Spring and I’m still debating on whether to leave him “as is” or to paint him.  I’m really loving the grey stone bunnies I’ve seen around the home decor stores.

Easter Decor 022Or maybe I’ll just paint his overalls pink and make him a her!

Easter Decor 011This is my favorite frame because I can print out seasonal pictures from The Graphics Fairy to change it up for each holiday.

Easter Decor 012I’ve added one of my tiny boxwood wreaths behind the glass to frame it.

Easter Decor 027On to my living room and another boxwood wreath hung on a lantern.

Easter Decor 026A lantern that is filled with more bunnies of course.

Easter Decor and Spring Arrangement 027I bought this stuffed bunny a couple of years ago because he looks so real.

Easter Decor 028I love his little chick friends too.

Easter Decor 029

Easter Decor 030

Easter Decor and Spring Arrangement 033In my dining room an old toolbox filled with lavender sits atop the hutch.

Easter Decor and Spring Arrangement 001A Spring Bouquet in a garden urn adorns the dining table,

Easter Decor and Spring Arrangement 007with another bird’s nest for good measure.

Easter Decor and Spring Arrangement 036One of my favorite things to create displays in is this large cloche that I’ve filled with Spring goodies.

Easter Decor 035Vintage sheet music with another miniature bird’s nest.

Easter Decor 039A mix of decoupaged eggs and gold leafed eggs.

Easter Decor 038A faux chocolate bunny purchased at Stein Mart.  This, after using a real chocolate bunny in a floral arrangement two years ago and finding it melted down into the flowers one sunny afternoon.

The weather is very Springlike and warm this week in South Carolina and the pollen is beginning to fly.  Hubby and I are working on a solution for keeping the furniture on the screened porch protected from the messy pollen this year.  I’ll let you know how that works out!  I hope you all are well and that you are enjoying the entrance into this new Season, wherever you may live.

Blessings friends,

A Junky, Mossy, Lacy, Easter Centerpiece!

April 14, 2014 by Patti 23 Comments

Easter Centerpiece 009Fresh Spring flowers.  A mix of hydrangeas, tulips and heather.

For an Easter Centerpiece does it get any better than that?

Easter Centerpiece 019Maybe . . . if you add in some wonderful vintage “junk” . . .

. . .  like old lace, a faded children’s book, an ironstone bowl and an old wooden strawberry crate.

Easter Centerpiece 045Then gather up some other items from Easter’s past, like decoupaged eggs . . .

Easter Centerpiece 007. . . and these adorable nesting bunnies.

Easter Centerpiece 004

Easter Centerpiece 001Easter Centerpiece 029I wish I could say the flowers were from my yard but the only thing blooming this early is my heather.  I gathered together an assortment of my favorite blooms from the floral department of my local grocery store and created a custom arrangement.

Easter Centerpiece 035For a period of time (when my kids were at home) I was doing this every week.  Somehow I got out of the habit.

Easter Centerpiece 036  It is an inexpensive way of treating oneself and I think I need to reestablish this old routine.  Flowers for Mr. OTN!  Yes, I’m sure he would agree 🙂

Easter Table Centerpiece 004As a final touch I added a couple of crystal candlesticks . . .

Easter Table Centerpiece 003. . . and placed it all atop a table runner made of moss.

Easter Centerpiece 056Here is one final view looking down from above through my “Wreathed” Chandy.

Isaiah 43:19 KJV – “Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?”

Awww . . . the season of Spring.  New things on the horizon.  I wonder what they will be?

Blessings,

My Signature-001

Mossy Easter Egg

March 22, 2013 by Patti 39 Comments

I thought I’d finished my Spring decorating (link back for more of that here) until I stopped in at my neighborhood Goodwill store and . . . well . . . you know how the story goes from there.

I spied this (not so) marvelous ceramic egg, circa 1978.

I didn’t love the pink flowers and there was a little chip off it’s nose (can you believe they were charging $1.99 for a chipped egg?) but  that was all okay. I immediately saw it’s potential and began to formulate my plan.

Step one: Gather some moss from my yard.

Step two: Lay it out to dry on Beauregard’s tray
(Beauregard is our porch watchdog).
NOTE: It is really good to allow the moss to dry completely. I was impatient and worked with it while it was still a bit damp, resulting in the surprise of little baby worms wiggling out of the moss when I applied the hot glue. Yuck! By morning they were all dried up and stuck to my tray.  Double yuck!

Step three: Print an Easter graphic from The Graphics Fairy, cut a few slits for ease in molding it around the egg’s lid and ModPodge in place (a layer of glue under the paper, another layer over).

Step four: Use the glue gun to attach moss to the bottom of the egg,

leaving the bottom uncovered so it would have a firm surface to stand upright.

Step five: Add a little ASCP Dark Wax to add age and highlight the wrinkles in the paper (I think they look a bit like cracks in the egg), topped by another coat of glossy ModPodge to seal and finish it off.

I think these bunnies are so darn cute!

I ended up gluing the egg’s top and bottom together for stability and glued a row of moss over the seam.

So now for deciding where to display my mossy little Easter egg . . .

. . . under cover on my cake plate,

with my vintage book Rabbit Hill (also a thrift store find),

or tucked in among my other decoupaged eggs (tutorial here).

I am delighted with this mossy, bunnied, egg.

Sometimes, I just have to say to God, “You are brilliant! I never could’ve come up with this idea without You!”
